I remember the very first time I made this cocktail. It was L Photographie Boat Day. Our whole photo team, along with our families embarked on a day of sun and fun on the Mississippi River.

For the record, even though I have lived in St. Louis for over 20 years, I had no idea that people actually boated on the Mississippi. I thought it was just for barges and riverboats. Also, I’ve heard way too many stories about how dirty the water is, so I’ve never wanted to venture into its muddy depths. But after a few of these cocktails, I jumped right in!

My goal for this trip was to create something that was interesting, easy to drink and refreshing on a hot summer day. In my opinion, this is one of the best drinks I’ve ever created (pat self on back, break arm.)

It starts with blackberry, rosemary simple syrup. I mashed the blackberries to release as much juice as possible and muddled the rosemary to release all of the flavor. Then I strained it into a plastic bottle to make it boat and river safe. I chose the Rangpur gin to add that hint of lime…perfect for a summer day. And then topped it with some club soda and gave it a stir. Even my scrupulous drinker and fellow boater Brad said it was one of the most well-balanced cocktails he has ever had. So, if you don’t believe me, believe Brad.
