I love this DIY Hand Cast Candle Holder. It looks super high-end, and a little scary to make yourself. However, DIY casting is really easy and affordable. All I did was buy a kit from Amazon that had almost all my supplies and within one evening I had a couple of really cool and creepy candle holders for my favorite holiday – Halloween.
What You Need
-
DIY Hand Casting Kit
-
Black Acrylic Paint
-
Paintbrush
-
Candles
Step 1
You are going to make your hand cast by following the instructions in your kit. I chose this one from Amazon but there are a ton out there. The steps are pretty simple, but you will want to prep your space and be ready to move between a few steps quickly.
- Decide how you should hold your hand to accommodate a candle.
- Mix your alginate molding powder with water
- Pour it into a container
- Quickly put your hand in the mold while it is still liquid (And I mean quickly – this stuff starts to harden immediately!)
- Be sure not to touch the sides or bottom of your container.
- Wait about 10 minutes – or until the mold hardens
- Wiggle your hand free from the mold
- Mix up your Casting powder and water
- Pour it slowly but immediately into your mold (By taking your time you lessen the risk of bubbles.)
- Set the mold aside.
- It will take approx. 2 hours to harden
- Once the cast has hardened you can peel away the mold
- It’s a little like jello at this point – so it’s easier than you think
Step 2
Once you make all of your plaster molds, it’s time to prep and paint them. Use fine sand paper to get rid of any lumps or imperfections on your cast then wipe them clean. You also need to eliminate the dust from sanding.
Step 3
Mix up a little black acrylic paint with water and paint your hands. I found a regular 1.5-inch basic paint brush worked the best. Smaller brushes left to many streaks. You want the paint to be a little translucent to give these a grayish skin affect, so gently apply the paint layer by layer. Once you get the tone you want, go back and add drip a little more paint into creases and crevices too make them stand out. Then place them somewhere to dry.
Step 4
Now just add your candles. Use a kitchen torch or a lit candle to soften the bottom of your candle so that you ensure it is straight. And that’s it! I told you it was easy.
